Old Mint The Old Mint in Berlin is a fascinating historical building complex in the heart of the city with an eventful history. The mint was built between 1936 and 1942 according to plans by Fritz Keibel and Arthur Reck as a central production site for coins, embedded in the National Socialist large-scale project to redesign Berlin's old town. Despite war damage, the facility continued to mint coins under difficult conditions during the Second World War. After the war, coin production resumed here and the Alte Münze was used until 2005 as an important mint for both the East German mark and later for the Deutschmark and the euro. The complex consists of impressive industrial and factory buildings, some of which are listed as historic monuments, which are now being revitalized as a creative cultural venue with studios, event spaces, and a variety of cultural projects. The Alte Münze is thus exemplary of Berlin's eventful history – from wartime to division to today's vibrant cultural landscape – and combines historical authenticity with modern urban creativity in the heart of the capital.
